Mackinaw City, Michigan

The name "Mackinaw City" is a bit of a misnomer as it is actually a village. The population greatly increases though during the tourist season with seasonal workers for the large number of hotels and other recreational facilities along the Straits of Mackinac. Mackinaw City is at the southern end of the Mackinac Bridge, which allows travel to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Mackinaw City, along with St. Ignace across the straits, is a base for ferries to Mackinac Island.
Mackinaw City Michigan offers year round vacation fun such as snowmobiling, fishing, sight seeing, hiking, boating, and camping. It is your last stop in Lower Michigan if you heading over the Mackinac Bridge to the Upper Peninsula.

The Federal Government took control of the property and the lock system in the 1870's.  Their stewardship continues today, administered by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.  The Soo Locks are the busiest locks in the world, and include the largest lock in the Western Hemisphere, completed in 1968.

Throughout the colorful history and on into the future, the roots of our heritage go back to  the native residents of the area.
The St. Marys River is the only water connection between Lake Superior and the other Great Lakes. There is a section of the river known as the St. Marys Rapids where the water falls about 21 feet from the level of Lake Superior to the level of the lower lakes. This natural barrier through navigation made necessary the construction of the locks project known as the St. Marys Falls Canal.
The world-famous Soo Locks form a passage for deep-draft ships around the rapids in the St. Marys River. Before white men came to the area, the Ojibway Indians who lived nearby portaged their canoes around the "Bawating" (rapids) to reach Lake Superior

Detroit: Detroit, the very symbol of American industrial might for most of the 20th century, is drawing up a radical renewal plan that calls for turning large swaths of this nowblighted, rusted-out city back into the fields and farmland that existed before the automobile. 

Operating on a scale never before attempted in this country, the city would demolish houses in some of the most desolate sections of Detroit and move residents into stronger neighborhoods. Roughly a quarter of the 139-square-mile city could go from urban to semi-rural.


Near downtown, fruit trees and vegetable farms would replace neighborhoods that are an eerie landscape of empty buildings and vacant lots. Suburban commuters heading into the city center might pass through what looks like the countryside to get there. Surviving neighborhoods in the auto industry’s birthplace would become pockets in expanses of green.


Mayor Dave Bing, who took office last year, is expected to unveil some details in his state-of-the-city address this month. “Things that were unthinkable are now becoming thinkable,” said James Hughes of Rutgers University, who is among the urban experts watching the experiment with interest. “There is now a realization that past glories are never going to be recaptured. Some people probably don’t accept that, but that is the reality.”


The meaning of what is afoot is now settling in across the city. “People are afraid,” said Deborah Younger, executive director of a group called Detroit Local Initiatives Support Corporation that is working to revitalize five areas of the city. “When you read that neighborhoods may no longer exist, that sends fear.”


Though the will to downsize has arrived, the way to do it is unclear and fraught with problems.


Politically explosive decisions must be made about which neighborhoods should be bulldozed and which improved. Hundreds of millions of federal dollars will be needed to buy land, raze buildings and relocate residents, since this financially desperate city does not have the means to do it on its own. It isn’t known how many people in the mostly black, blue-collar city might be uprooted, but it could be thousands. AP

USA, November 24, 2010 (by Saumya Arya Haas): I am vegetarian. I am American, but there is no turkey on my table. At Thanksgiving, my house today is as confusing, chaotic and lively as my childhood. But it’s not “turkey day.” Traditionally, we make lasagna. I’m not sure how that started. But it’s perfect: an Italian dish, a Hindu cook, an American table.

I also make the whole, expected, shebang: mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, cranberry sauce, about four different kinds of pie and chai. My family would rebel if there was no chai.


My family experience of being Hindu is deeply rooted in inclusiveness, social equity and community service. Chai-party values, if you like. Giving is part of being thankful: We acknowledge our own bounty and share with those who have less. This year I am achingly aware of those who have less, those who struggle to put everyday food on the table. I can’t imagine the anxiety that Thanksgiving, with all its demands of abundance, must bring to those who have no abundance. I am shamed by my shallow vision of perfection.


Bounty is not only the material: it is the strength of our hearts, the power of our intellect, the wisdom of our traditions, the poetry of our being. Community is the communion of sharing these things. Sharing means giving as well as receiving. We are intertwined; our actions reverberate and echo and come around again. No one only gives or only receives.


Everyone brings something to the table.

On Thanksgiving, I have been surprised by unanticipated guests, interesting food, odd drinks, badly-behaved pets, talented teenagers, amazing stories and conversations both warm and contentious. More than anything, I have been surprised by the thrill of the unexpected amid the familiarity of ritual. My expectations are always challenged.


I have to surrender my image of perfection. The reality is far messier, but it is warm and real, unpredictable and delicious. It is the abundance at my table.


There’s pumpkin pie on the table and chai on the stove. This is America, after all. We create our own truth, if there even is a truth at all. We are all poor in something. We share with those who have less. Everyone brings something. We are imperfect, real, enriched.

Having gone around Boston all along upto my last Silver Post, the 25th., during the past 4 months since my landing here on 10th June'10, let us now board a Domestic Flight to Detroit, International Airport of the State of Michigan. There, camping at Tanglewood Drive, suburb of Farmington Hills where my daughter, Usha lives with Husband Ambrish & kids, let us travel towards Henry Ford Museum to start with!

In our school days, we had read Detroit as  The City of Automobiles.The most popular American Industrialist, Henry Ford was the person who was instrumental in devoloping it to the extent it is now known world-wide! His Inspiring Bio-data can be read from the Link given below!

Deviating from our system of dealing with States in alphabetical order, Michigan is now taken up since Detroit comes under State of Michigan. It is in Mid-west region, having two Parts, separated by water- Upper Peninsula & Lower Peninsula.It became 26th State in 1837.Four Lakes namely Erie, Huran, Michigan & Superior are surrounding the two parts of Peninsula. South of Detroit is Canada.
Here only, the breakfast food cereal, Cornflakes was invented by the Kellogg Brothers in the late 1800s. Its capital- Lansing.
State bird- Robin.
State flower- Apple Blossom
State stone- Petoskey.
It has more miles of fresh water shore lines than any other state. The depths of four lakes vary from 1300 ft for Superior to 210 ft for Erie.Lake Michigan has depth 925 ft while Huran has 750ft.

New Delhi: If you had not heard of Narayanan Krishnan, as I had not, it is a collective failure. This is one of the most incredible stories of personal commitment.

Narayanan Krishnan, all of 29 years old now, does what he was professionally trained to do as a chef. Feed people. Only Krishnan does not do this in the swanky confines of a 5-star hotel. Every day, he wakes up at 4 am, cooks a simple hot meal and then, along with his team, loads it in a van and travels about 200 km feeding the homeless in Madurai, Tamil Nadu.

Krishnan feeds, often with his hands, almost 400 destitute people every day. And for those who need it, he provides a free haircut too.

According to CNN, eight years ago, this award-winning chef with a five-star hotel chain was all set to go to Switzerland for a high-profile posting. On a visit to a Madurai temple, he came across a homeless, old man eating his own human waste. That stark sight changed Krishnan's life.

Much to the dismay of his parents, CNN says, Krishnan abandoned his career plans and decided to spend his life and his professional training in looking after those who could not care for themselves. He has provided more than 1.2 million hot meals through his nonprofit organisation Akshaya Trust, and now hopes to extend this to shelter for the homeless too.

Krishnan is the only Indian in a list of 10 heroes that CNN has picked worldwide to honour. One of them will be chosen CNN Hero of the Year, selected by the public through an online poll. If many Indians get together to vote for this inspiring man, he can win by a long mile.

If Krishnan wins he will get $100,000 in addition to the $25,000 that he gets for being shortlisted for the Top 10. Akshaya Trust needs all the monetary support it can get to build on Krishnan's dream. Let's help him get there.

"One thing we had noticed is why people didn't get the real subtext and reason for the various roles and hence the title.

If you knew the real dasavatharams of Lord Vishnu and their characters you can appreciate the script more.

Let me explain, starting with the best adapted role:

1. Krishna avatar - Vincent Poovaraghavan

Lord krishna is actually a dalit, he is dark-skinned [shyamalam]. He saved draupadi when she was being violated and he was the actual diplomat in mahabharatham. Lord krishna dies of an arrow striking his lower leg. Now look at how vincent was introduced.. he appears when asin is about to be molested and he saves her like draupadi. Vincent is the dalit diplomat, fights for land issue [soil issue to be exact] and dies from the metal rod striking his leg. Oh even five of vincent's men are drugged at P. Vasu's.. sounds familiar???

2. Balarama avatar - Balarama naidu

This is an easy given. as the name suggests and the role personifies you can easily get it.

3. Mathsya avatar - Ranagaraja nambi

nambi is thrown into water in an act of trying to save lord from being thrown into sea, though vainly. what more clue do you want?

4. Varaha avatar - Krishnaveni paatti

During the mukunda song, krishnaveni paatti does varaha avatar in the shadow puppetry. The frame freezes on it for a second. there is the clue. Moreover, in varaha avatar lord actually hides earth so as to protect life forms. Here too krishnaveni hides the germs - life form inside the statue so as to protect.

5. Vamana avatar - Kalifulla khan

remember in vamana avatar, lord vishnu takes the vishvaroopa, that is the giant form! Hence the giant kalifulla here symbolises vamana avatar.

6. Parasurama avatar - Christian Fletcher

Parasurama is actually on an angry killing spree and killed 21 generations of the particular kshatriya vamsa. Hence the real KILLER... Guess what thats what our Fletcher is! He comes around with the gun [modern upgrade for axe] and kills everyone around. I have to check if he kills 21 people though. :-D

7. Narasimha avatar - Shingen Narahashi

first of all the name itself is a play on the words singam [means lion in tamil] and narasimha [the avatar being symbolised]. Lord Narasimha manifests himelf to kill the bad guy and he also teaches prahaladha. In the movie, he shows up to kill the killer fletcher! and is also a teacher.. Lord Narasimha had to kill the asura with bare hands and hence the martial arts exponent here.. get it?

8. Rama avatar - Avatar Singh

Lord Rama stands for the one man one woman maxim, kind of symbolising true love.. Here Avatar portrays that spirit by saying that he loves his woman more than anything and wants to live for her.

9. Kalki avatar - Govindaraj Ramasamy

As you know, the hero in kaliyug can be none other than the Kalki avatar!!!

10. Koorma avatar - Bush

This is the most loose adaptation I couldn't clearly comprehend. But if you look at the real koorma avatar, the lord is the turtle/tortoise that helps in stirring the ksheera sagara and bringing out the amruth. This essentially creates war among the devas and asuras. Similarly today Bush facilitates war between you know whom... May be Kamal also indicates that this avatar is a bit dumb like the tortoise...

Here is an actor who created waves beyond India after Raj kapoor who was popular in Russia with his own Movies! Rajani was craze in Japan & elsewhere when his Chandramukhi was released!

9)- ERA OF TAMIL MOVIES AT CHITTARANJAN:

Let us now go back to Chittaranjan Railway Colony where there was no scope of seeing Tamil Movies those days. But we, the Fans of Tamil Movies, inspired by those Andhra friends who were successful in bringing Telugu Films, decided to form a Cine-club!There was a Theatre run by the Rly. Admn. at concessional rates for members on roll!Since Telugu Movies were brought & screened once a month in another Rly theatre, we went & met the Manager. He accepted screening Tamil Movies once a month but ticket selling should be done by us. The minimum amount to avoid loss should be paid at any cost to him since we Tamils were so small in strength that one house-ful show was impossible!
We decided to share the cost of loss if it occurs & at the same time also to share the amount of profit among ourselves.We were to go  Kolkata, 235 Kms away, at our own cost well in advance to meet the local distributor for selecting the Movie, the best available to us for screening on specific day. Then comes making the Slide by hand for publicity to show in interval.Ticket books were printed & taken around the vast & wide colony to sell.We used to travel by cycle well beyond the boundary to the nearby towns also. We were in groups to cover the entire area specifically around salary days!Bio-data of the Movie chosen to be told to the family contacted & they to be convinced politely to buy the tickets. Members can not avail the usual concessions for this show.Whoever bought the tickets will be acknwledged on the counterfoil with their names & address. Tickets to be exchanged at the counter on the day of screening for the real ones with seat Nos.In case of anybody's failure in reporting for  the show, the cost of the tickets would be refunded after the show when the absentees will be known from the conuterfoils.For refunds, we used to go again to those absentees at their homes.Non-tamils including Bengalis were supporting us by taking tickets irrespective of their interest in such Movies.Like that many Movies were brought & screened but to our loss only since Huseful could not be ensured. ' Thiruvilaiyadal ' was the exception when few went back  without tickets since it was a Houseful show. we could gain some amount, thereby making up the loss!


10)- ரஜனி வழி தனி வழி:
 கருப்புதான் எனக்கு பிடிச்ச கலரு!
Rajani though black by complexion, was the craze among the Kids & Grown-ups just because of his famous Punch dialogues & light acrobats by Hands.He was adored by the above song in some other movie! The media publicity for his 'Enthiren' was unique thereby sustainong the tempo until it was screened. We could watch the movie here at Boston on its last day, last show! Hall was almost empty! Look at the Banner displayed inside by his Fans in the Photos above.Movie as a whole was partly entertaining &Since my watching Movie- Jurassic partly serious.We however were upset with Rahman music, likewise the Heroine!The Road to this Hi-tech movie from the Edison era, centuries back, was phenominal!
Since my watching 'Jurassic Park' at Chittaranjan years back, Rajani & his Charisma forced me to enjoy his Movie now! How were the days! Where we stand now? What more is ahead? Time alone will tell!
