Boarding into our car with luggages from Boston Airport, it took just 15 minutes to reach our Apartment situated at Arlington.Travel by Roadways itself was unique in the sense that just after Airport, we travelled through a long tunnel, called ' SUMNER ', named after a Historian, built below the confluence of Rivers 'Mystic'& 'Charles' with ' Atlantic Ocean' that could be seen flowing along the Tunnel on both sides for around one Mile. Video taken through the tunnel will be sent later.Viewing the Link- "http://www.massport.com/logan-airport/Pages/Default.aspx" will also help you all in getting better idea about the site of Airport, in & around. Its sub-links by clicking & viewing will make you understand on facilities for Rail- cum-bus Transport to reach Boston City & Suburbs.Infact, Airport & Harbour along the Atlantic Ocean are situated close to each other.

ANUBHAVAM PUDHUMAI- 5

Thanks to you all for comments, encouraging & encouraging with check-point on words used by me. That is what, I needed indeed!Let me now focus on ' checks'.Here they are as under-
- In my profile, I had mentioned me as- EGO-LESS. Have you ever seen anybody ego-less? When I wrote it, it was my wish only, to be like that & I am trying my best to remain like that!I should not have proclaimed myself that I am ego-less as the viewer pointed it out.It is for others to judge by your Attitude towards them. Swami Chinmayananda has said that' WHEN EGO ENTERS, GOD VANISHES! WHEN EGO VANISHES, GOD ENTERS!!' After all, Attitude makes Altitude!
- Now comes, NEGRO word used in Part-4. I should not have used it atleast for humorous-sake, sitting in their own MOTHER-LAND! As the viewer pointed out correctly,

'Don't use the word 'Negro' here in this country. They are respectfully called African Americans. It is considered as a derogatory word. And Native Americans are not African Africans . They were the native people of this land - long before the whites arrived. African Americans were brought to America as slaves. Therefore, Friends, NEVER, REPEAT NEVER, USE THAT DEROGATORY WORD NOT ONLY HERE AT US BUT AT GLOBAL LEVEL PLEASE.
SORRY FOR SUCH LAPSES!
Resuming now my Blog-5, remember we were at Boston Airport looking for our son, Mahesh.Moving slowly with two trolley-loads of 6 luggages, I overlooked the real exit point just crossed, despite the prompt reminder by Rajam, towards the exit for Taxis round about only to reach the real exit again but outside.Mahesh was looking for us inside. When we went inside, he came out. We then tried to call him over booth by seeking dollar exchanged as cents when another stranger came from nowhere holding a Cell-phone & helped me calling Mahesh. But no response! Then tried Home No when Akila responded saying he is at Airport only, searching us. Rajam looked anxious, longing to see him in a hurry. Then, I took another round leaving her outside, playing hide & seek with Mahesh. Got him atlast at outside only while he was rushing towards us. Thanked the stranger for helping me in need & offered the coins but he politely refused. In this way, in this Great country & enroute, we were not at all left in disarray as & when need arises. They are all Messengers sent by God!
Mahesh took time off to bring his own car parked elsewhere for want of space nearby.Waiting again but no tension. Took few snaps only after ensuring that any stout lady not looking at me taking snaps.

ANUBHAVAM PUDHUMAI-4

We all had arrived at Boston Airport having been relieved of last minute tension while landing!
Now, let us all go back to Paris Airport where I had forgotten to add one interesting event in Part-3.
Just before arrival of Tamil family with whom we had happy rapport until boarding the flight, we both were sitting alone, looking aimlessly all over the Gate 31.One lady, looking more black than me, tried to attract my attention. Then, whispered,- 'American?' towards me.Feeling elated over this unexpected honour from unknown lady, I said-' No' But I truly wished to be an American for that moment since she reognised me as American though I was Black! Then, it suddenly struck my mind that there are Native Americans also Black called Negroes which they don't like called by some body. Was she trying to recognise me as Negro? Feeling upset over this just because I am not so Black looking like Negro, had it been, Rajam would not have married me at all.Fair & Black are just creation of God, whenever God runs out of fair colour, he uses Black, vice versa.Earlier, in my school days, my Science teacher failed to approve me as Iyer because of my complexion & declared me as 'Chettiar' instead because all other Iyer students under his control were looking fair! This inferiority complex was there with me all along until the Tamil Movie- நானும் ஒரு பெண்! released & became a HIT with popular song- கண்ணா, கருமை நிற கண்ணா! After all, our ALMIGHTY is also Black but every body adores him! 'Hello!'- A reminder voice from that lady brought me back to this world at Paris. She then produced a slip to me written as- I don't know English, Help me! Feeling elated again because I know one language which she does not know, Icould somehow understood her problem & solved the same by escorting her to the reception counter where she could produce her ticket & know her flight timings & the Departure gate.
Getting back to Boston Airport, we both could easily go upto the Customs clearance counter where we were certified 'OK' by the officer concerned after his going thro' the form submitted by us. This form along with Immigration forms for one each were given to us at Gate-31 before boarding the Boston flight. There was long queue at the counter concerned due to which we could take time off for refreshing us at the Rest rooms in between. I-Forms also were found OK after which I took one snap of Rajam all alone in the crowd. One stout lady in uniform rushed towards me & told not to take.I admitted that snap had already been taken which was then forcibly deleted & shown to her to her satisfaction. Then, we moved slowly towards the collection belt of Luggages & found the belt not at all moving. Place looked empty since all Passengers had already left with their luggages. Our luggages were found lying isolated in the non-moving belt.
Collecting them, we moved towards Security where scanning was done. Then came the tension- one Hand luggage was forced open by the staff in our presence.I seemed that while passing thro' scanning something attracted teir attention, hence the opening Among the items, there was one bunch of Brass lamps, small size. They asked us their purpose & we tried to explain the same.To our pleasant surprise, the American who did the searching asked the other person to tacklethe same. The other happened to be a Tamil person, hailing from Karaikkal. His Tamil was not fully understandable -' மொத்தமா எதாவது வசிருகிங்கள ' After repeated queries, I could understand that he meant to say that the purpose of the whole bunch of lamps. The American got convinced with his reply & neatly kept back everything in the suit case which was bulging out earlier. Then came the most unexpected word of JOY!' நன்றி! Who said that? None other than The American himself! Thereby the voyage was complete, starting with ' வணக்கம்' at start by the American at Chennai Consulate while granting us Visa & at the end as above.
Now came the stage of locating Mahesh waiting for us at Exit! It was equally interesting in other respect. Let us see that in our next Part-5.along with the link for Boston Airport snaps.

ANUBHAVAM PUDHUMAI- 3

Continuing from Part- 2 where the mystery of missing Rajam at Paris Airport Gate 31 was left unresolved-

Looking at the place where I left her, I couls see only my luggages but she- Nowhere! Puzzled!

வடாம் காயப்போடலையா வரதுக்கு முன்னாடியே ?- Tamil voice could then be heard from elsewhere at unknown place! Turning towards the end of voice source could be seen the Mother of Language, who else? There she was! Also could be seen a Tamil Lady with another young boy!Leaving all luggages, she had moved to them at the opposite Gate, attracted by her own language & culture. On enquiry, could come to know that she, accompanied by her second son, is also bound for Boston by the same flight, having arrived there from Delhi after us. Her first son is employed at Boston. Wherever our lady-folk travel at Global level, vadam, idli, dosa, etc. follow them! Remember, வாஷிங்டனில் திருமணம் !

On exchanging names & Addresses, it was now time for boarding our flight for which Passes with Seat Nos. had already been given at Mumbai along with Token slips for Checked-in luggages for receiving at Boston. Our seats were 54J & K, again at window side & adj. Departing at 13.40 Hrs, local time, we travelled for 7 Hrs 25 Mins, about to reach Boston at US-Eastern time, 15.05 Hrs.Light Meal soon on take-off followed by snacks in the evening, time was spent without watching TV Progs since there was no provision for such small TV screen like seen earlier during the flight to Paris. Parameters shown however in common screen while taking off & landing in.Just prior to landing, Air-hostess came to us & told to wait for all others to get down & then leave.Puzzled with evil thoughts for some time, asked her for what? She then again raised the question of need for wheel chairs. Politely told her- No!

Then came in the visibility of Boston! Then the Plane started shaking heavily with sound all of a sudden for some time. Little scared of any thing going erratic! Then it became stable & calm. Then followed the clapping of Passengers until landing smoothly.I could smell some thing went wrong initially but the Pilot managed it nicely to our relief- hence the clapping in token of appreciation. You can watch it, the final moments of anxiety/suspense captured in video please.

Another suspense-cum-anxiety soon followed, once our luggages were about to be checked out!
Can we look into it in our forthcoming Part-4 please?

Till then, BYE!

ANUBHAVAM PUDHUMAI - 2

Thanks to those encouraged me with positive feedback on Part- I.This is my second visit to US but the first to Boston.
My first visit was limited to Michigan where we stayed with Daughter's family during the period- 6th June to 21st November'03, Thanks to my Son'n-law who had sponsored that visit. Still I remember those multiples of pages he had sent me by post listing out Dos & Donts for International travels, Model Questions & Answers to tackle Customs & Immigration Authorities. Since I was stranger to PC & Internet at that time, they taught me the Basics at the Basement of their Villa where I had my own world daily for some time. While my first visit was a landmark in that respect, this second visit has taken to me to the new world of so called Blog, Facebook, etc.

Back to the present topic as under-
9th June’10 – Boarding Flight from Peelamedu, Coimbatore.
Since it was better to have one person to accompany us upto the Airport in order to hand over any luggage not accepted by the Check-in Authy on any ground like having prohibited, restricted goods or found exceeding the limit i.e. > 23 Kg per luggage for Check-in & >12 Kg for cabin, my brother at Coimbatore joined us. However, every thing was found within the limit. As there was only one public booth, Tata-indicom inside the Lounge area, that too working upto 18.00Hrs daily, I could not avail its services since my check-in started only after 18.00 Hrs, for calling Mahesh over Phone that we could board the flight without any difficulty. Our cell Phones were kept back at home under the custody of my friend for revalidating its Prepaid card on its scheduled date in our absence. Reliance Phone with my brother was not at all reliable refusing to accept ISD Calls for unknown reasons. He was then requested to convey the message from his home on reaching.
On 9th June at 20.20 Hrs we boarded Jetlite/ Air Sahara flight- S2646, Boeing 737-700 occupying window seat 22E & the near 22F, upto Mumbai- Domestic terminal. Seats were allotted only when Boarding passes were issued after check-in.
9th June – Arrival Mumbai, Domestic Terminal
Arriving at 22.05 Hrs, thro’ Jetlite Porter, picking our checked-out luggages on free service boarded shuttle bus, holding inter-terminal coach tickets, to International terminal when they were collected & checked in again by us. Though we were told by Mahesh earlier that they would be automatically carried upto Boston because of the tie-up between Jetlite & Airfrance, We were clearly told by Jetlite at Peelamedu Arport that they have no such tie-up but their partners jet airways have such tie-up with Air france. However, at International terminal, we could do it by ourselves & Immigration forms were also filled up at the relevant counter.Right from the beginning, we were repeatedly asked for the need of wheel chairs at all Airports because Mahesh asked for the same for our convenience. In case of asking for the same, we are supposed to alight at the last at every stop-over as directed by Air-hostess, when persons with wheel chairs will help us in moving us with luggages from flight to flight Then Seniors like us need not know the whereabouts of facilities, directions, etc. However, we declined & avoided chairs upto Boston.Idea of such elaborate text at times is unavoidable since it is our wish that others should take care of such lapses occured in our Tour.
10th June, 2010 – On BoardSince our onward flight AF217- Boeing 777-200 was scheduled to depart at 02.25 Hrs. we had enough time to complete all formalities without sitting idle.
In that connecting flight, we had seats at middle row only, 29F &G & were served snacks for breakfast at 04.00 Hrs, based on Menu card for choices, after which lights were switched off for sleeping.Every seat had a small TV Screen where we could choose & watch the entertainments variable from music, cartoons,Movies, etc by clicking the Menu. Taking off was shown with Parameters of speed, Altitude, Temp & distance travelled. Likewise, prior to landing at Paris on 10th, after travelling for 10Hrs, 10 Mins, such parameters were shown again in screen. We were served light meals just at 13.00Hrs, again on Menu card for choice. While landing, Airport was found wet with chilly winds from heavy shower overnight.

Co-passengers were courteous in helping us with keeping or removing luggages from Cabin Similaly, at Paris Airport, Crew & others guided us to the proper route to reach the other terminal far away to catch Boston flight. When we tried to board Shuttle bus to Terminal-2B with luggages, Rajam failed to get into the bus in time when it started moving with closing of Auto-doors midway. She somehow managed without slipping & falling. Simlarly, while getting down, my legs got entangled with the same doors about to close.Since I failed to intimate Mahesh over phone at Peelamedu Airport on safe departure, I tried the same at Paris Airport by using Public booth with US Dollars available with me but in vain due to such Booths could accept only Euro coins.I tried to exchange $ with Euro at the relevant counter but in vain again since could not follow the instruction given across the counter in French Accent. Then I tried US Credit card given for such purposes by Mahesh for the first time but got scared to swipe the same in the slot for security sake. Unwarranted but relevant thoughts like- what to do in case the card refusing to get out or money in dollars getting vanished due to some fraudulent means, etc.cropped up in my mind! I left finally the idea of calling & went back to the boarding Gate 31 where I could not find Rajam in 'Yadhasthanam' ! Why? What happened?

Let us get into the mystery world where Rajam went in my next Part- III!

Meanwhile, I remember a true incident in my life where lack of knowledge in specific language played a humorous part. Here it is!

When I was a bachelor employed in Chittaranjan Locomotive works of West Bengal, sharing Mess accomodation with other tamil bachelor friends during late 60's, we were forced to cook our daily bread ourselves. Milkman from adjacent Bihar used to give milk every day morning & evening.Since the cow-milk was not good enough to make solid mode of curd, we wanted milk man to fetch us Buffalo milk in lieu.Specific word in Hindi for Buffalo was not known to us initially. With great effort, we tried sincerely to make him understand our need!Having failed, we uttered in spoken Hindi- ' EMEN KA VAHAN KA DUDH CHAHIYE!', without knowing the vehicle of Lord Yama is Male Buffalo & not female. கொஞ்சம் சிரிக்கலாமே ! , PLEASE.

Now comes here, are few snaps of Panoramic views of Terminal Gates at Paris through my picassa album!

Look at vast space with less people in the rainy day!

Anubhavam Pudhumai Americavil Kanden - 1

1.0 Foreward:

Having availed an opportunity to visit USA on Tourist visa B2 for six months, thanks to my Son, Mahesh & Daughter-in law, Akila, I could stay at his residential Apartment situated in Arlington town near Boston, the capital of the State of Massachusetts, during the period 10.06.10 to 02.12.10 & observe the mode of life, Indians leading there with family & children. Prior to giving you all a brief on the same, let me narrate a few formalities I was directed upon to comply before boarding the Flight on 9th June’10 at Coimbatore Peelamedu Airport.
2.0 Status of Visitors like me at US.
2.1 Non- Immigrants :

Normally obtained quickly but limited in both the time spent in the US & the activity engaged in.Most have to show they have a permanent residence at Native country away from USA which they have no intention of abandoning & must overcome a presumption that they are seeking to immigrate to the US.However, these limitations do not apply to persons seeking to enter the US as H1 temporary workers or L1incorporate transferee. Most common types of N.I.Status are-
2.1.1- Visitor for business or pleasure:B-1 or B-2
2.1 Academic student :F-1
2.2 Non-academic student :M-1
2.3 Temporary worker :H-1
2.4 Non-professional temporary worker :H-2
2.5 Trainee :H-3
2.6 Exchange visitor : J-1
2.7 Finance : K
2.8 Intra corporate Transferee : L-1
Non-citizens of USA either as Non-immigrants (temporary) or as Immigrants (permanent).
3.0 Applying for Visa- ON-LINE.
It is the only way of seeking Visa either throughTravel Agents or by our own children sponsoring for the visit. Obviously, my son, being my sponsor, helped me in getting it done through Skype-chat. Just within a few hours of chat across the Globe, application was filed separately for self & Rajam with Photos submitted & pasted. Confirmation copy intimating the date of the interview for visa was also received.Photos for visa have certain specifications laid down which could be taken at selected Photo studios only, Savitri studio of Ram Nagar, Coimbatore was one of them. on 5th April, process for visit started by scanning &sending our old & new Passports to Mahesh for applying for Visa.Special set of Photos were taken at Savitri studio,Ram Nagar on 9th April.Applications for visa – ON LINE, was launched on 11th. Under guidance from Mahesh & Akila. 30th April was the date given in confirmation by the US Consulate, Chennai.
3.1.Preliminary things complied prior to departure!
Processing of visa documents then commenced at both ends. Mahesh was working OVERTIME for Sponsor documents at his end while I was doing Affidavits supported by certificates from Bhaskaran, CA at RS Puram. The entire documents were then got ready just before our departure for Visa interview on 30th. We left for Chennai on 28th & stayed for 2 days.Interview was simple & fast without asking for any documents in support. The person, obviously American took interview in Tamil without needing the help of translators, as requested by us during our application, to our pleasant surprise & wished us 'Vanakkam' at the end. Since the visa granted will be sent by Couriers unlike collecting it earlier across the counter the same day evening, we could leave the office of Consulate by 12.00 Hrs itself. Back home, we received by courier- Blue Dart, the Passports duly granting visa for 10 years with Multiple entries on 5th May.

3.2.Later, while we were at Palakkad we got a call from Akila saying that our Air tickets had been booked by flight leaving on 9th June for Mumbai towards Boston & also return ticket for 2nd Dec. Date of departure was advanced to avail benefits of economic deal booked on line thro’ Vayoma. Then, the process of shopping, arranging suit-cases, etc. was hurried which went upto the day of departure.
