Obvious, we were part of the Milling crowds that day to reach the Banks of Charles but by late evening only
by which time practically no space was available on vantage points to witness the popular Fireworks.People used to assemble right from early morning to reserve space with Tents pitched, umbrallas placed, etc. We could squizze ourselves somehow to find space finally on the Banks at Cambridge side.Live music by World famous-Symphony Orchestra; lectures until the commencement of the event kept us engaged in listening. Also we could succeed in catching glimpses of Fireworks in our Camera but not with clarity due to the limtations of Camera & Venue! Moreover, it was pitch-dark allover due to Power Shutdown on both ends of the Charles!
Whatever possible was done & shared with you all as Slide-show with Captions below!

2)- US MEDIA ON OUR CULTURE:-
Here is a classic example to view how Local Media of Newspapers  depicts our Culture, thanks to the Yahoo Group of Thatha Patti which brought out the same recently!

Just recollect my earlier Blog- 11  where I had given another Link, also the Local Media depicting our Culture but on  the Soil of US  covering AMMA Amritananda Mayi's Spiritual visit here hugging Millions over her range of visits till date! More such exposures will follow time & again in our Blogs to follow!
3)- US MEDIA ON FOOD & HEALTH:
Now comes the Role of Media on exposing the fear of Adulteration in the Products of Popular Food Manufacturers- M/s Kellog!
Limitations on existing infrastructures here at US Admn. to detect in time for corrective & Preventive actions are also discussed which is reproduced below- Thanks to Thatha Patti Group of Yahoo again.

This summer, when Kellogg recalled 28 million boxes of Froot Loops, Apple Jacks, Corn Pops and Honey Smacks, the company blamed elevated levels of a chemical in the packaging.

Dozens of consumers reported a strange taste and odor, and some complained of nausea and diarrhea. But Kellogg said a team of experts it hired determined that there was "no harmful material" in the products.

Federal regulators, who are charged with ensuring the safety of food and consumer products, are in the dark about the suspected chemical, 2-methylnaphthalene. The Food and Drug Administration has no scientific data on its impact on human health. The Environmental Protection Agency also lacks basic health and safety data for 2-methylnaphthalene -- even though the EPA has been seeking that information from the chemical industry for 16 years.

The cereal recall hints at a larger issue: huge gaps in the government's knowledge about chemicals in everyday consumer products, from furniture to clothing to children's products. Under current laws, the government has little or no information about the health risks posed by most of the 80,000 chemicals on the U.S. market today.

"It is really troubling that you've got this form of naphthalene that's produced in millions of pounds a year and we don't have some of the basic information about how toxic it is," said Erik Olson, an expert at the Pew Charitable Trusts, which is advocating an overhaul of U.S. chemical laws. "In so many cases, government agencies are missing data they need on even widely used chemicals about whether they pose a health risk."

The information gap is hardly new. When the Toxic Substances Control Act was passed in 1976, it exempted from regulation about 62,000 chemicals that were in commercial use -- including 2-methylnaphthalene. In addition, chemicals developed since the law's passage do not have to be tested for safety. Instead, companies are asked to volunteer information on the health effects of their compounds, and the government can decide whether additional tests are needed.

In 1994, the EPA invited the chemical industry to submit health and safety data for 2-methylnaphthalene because it was being produced in large quantities, said Mary F. Dominiak of the EPA. Chemical manufacturers have yet to disclose that information, she said.

And they may not even have it. If a manufacturer possesses data showing that a chemical harms health or the environment, it is required to turn over the findings to the EPA. Critics say that creates a disincentive for manufacturers to test their chemicals.

Kellogg responded to a request for comment by referring to the statement it issued with its recall, which said, "While the potential for serious health problems is low, some consumers are sensitive to the uncharacteristic off-flavor and smell and should not eat the recalled products because of possible temporary symptoms including nausea and diarrhea."

Bills pending in Congress would revamp the way the government regulates chemicals, forcing companies to prove that new chemicals are safe before using them and requiring health and safety assessments of existing chemicals, such as 2-methylnaphthalene. The chemical industry has said it agrees the law should be revamped, but it also has expressed concern that new restrictions might hamper innovation and competitiveness.

One federal agency has minimal information about 2-methylnaphthalene -- the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, which reviewed the scientific literature on the chemical in 2005. It concluded that nothing is known about its use related to food. "You are not likely to be exposed . . . eating foods or drinking beverages" and risk exposure only "if you live near a hazardous waste site," according to the agency's Web site.

A natural component of crude oil, 2-methylnaphthalene is structurally related to naphthalene, an ingredient in mothballs and toilet-deodorant blocks that is considered a possible human carcinogen by the EPA. Kay Cooksey, a packaging expert at Clemson University, said 2-methylnaphthalene likely ended up in cereal because something went awry in the manufacturing of the foil-lined bags. The foil is attached to the paper bag with an adhesive that is heated, she said. If too much heat is applied or if the composition of the adhesive is incorrect, 2-methylnaphthalene could form, she said.

The chemical "is not supposed to be in food," said Mitchell Cheeseman of the FDA's office of food safety. The agency allows a minute amount of the chemical in food packaging if it is produced as a "contaminant" during the manufacturing process, but it is not supposed to transfer to the food, he said.

Because the FDA does not know anything about the toxicity of 2-methylnaphthalene, the agency set its limit based on what it knows about the toxic effects of similar chemicals, Cheeseman said.

He added that the FDA does not know what caused the Kellogg contamination, how much 2-methylnaphthalene might have migrated into the cereals or if it was the only contaminant. The agency did not perform its own tests on the cereals.

Roberta Wagner of the FDA's Office of Regulatory Affairs said Kellogg destroyed most of the tainted liners before it contacted the agency and announced a recall.

"Basically, Kellogg's investigated the situation before they made the decision to do the recall," Wagner said. "They did their own testing." She said the agency continues to investigate.

The company submitted a copy of its health risk assessment to the FDA, but neither Kellogg nor the agency would release it.

Cheeseman said it is unusual for contaminants to migrate from packaging into foods.

But others are less certain. "In this case, it had an odor and it had a taste, so it was detected," said David Andrews, a senior scientist at the Environmental Working Group, an advocacy organization. "But there are hundreds of other potential impurities that we can't smell and taste, chemicals that we know very little about and the government knows little about."

Needs a lot of Thinking... Can you answer this?

Once there was a bus conductor, who was very rude to his passengers. One day a beautiful young girl, of around 18 years, tried to board the bus, but he didn't stop the bus. Unfortunately the beautiful young girl came under the bus and died on the spot.

Angry passengers took the conductor to the police station, who in turn took him to the court.

The judge was not at all impressed with him and gave him capital punishment.

He was taken to the electrocution chamber.

There was a single chair in the center of the room and a single banana peel at one corner of the room.

The conductor was strapped to the chair and high voltage current was given to him! .

But to everyone's amazement, he survived.

The judge decided to set him free, and he returned to his profession.

After a few months, this time, a good looking middle aged woman tried to board the bus but the conductor didn't stop the bus.

Unfortunately, this time also, the good looking middle aged woman came under the bus and died on the spot. Again angry passengers took him to the police station, who in turn took him to the court.

The judge took one look at the conductor and gave him capital punishment.

The Bus conductor was taken to the same electrocution chamber where there was a single chair in the center of the room and a single banana peel at one corner of the room.

He was strapped to the chair and high voltage current was given to him.

This time also to everyone's amazement, he survived.

The judge decided to set him free, and he returned to his profession.

A couple of months later, an elderly gentleman tried to board the bus.

This time the Bus conductor, remembering his earlier experiences, stopped the bus.

Unfortunately the elderly gentleman slipped and died due to his injuries.

The conductor was taken to the police station and then to the court, to the same judge.

Though he hadn't done anything wrong, but considering his past record the judge decided to set an example and gave him capital punishment.

The Bus conductor was again taken to the same electrocution chamber where there was a single chair in the center of the room and a single banana peel at one corner of the room.

He was strapped to the chair and high voltage current was given to him.

This time he died instantly !!!!!!!!!!!

The question is why didn't he die on the first two occasions, but died instantly the third time??

Try to solve it yourselves. This is rather interesting and answer is perfectly logical.

If necessary read the puzzle once again.

Still you couldn't, Then see below...

Think hard

Tired????

wanna know the answer????

Answer :

During the first two times, the conductor was a Bad Conductor, therefore electricity didn't pass through him.

But during the third time, he was a Good conductor, electricity passed through him freely and he died!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!! !

Ha Ha Ha ha !!!!!!!! Obviously you gotta revise your science chapter on Electricity..................Back to Basics..

HUMOUR:
A young couple had been arguing about what new vehicle they would buy. He wanted a big truck, but she wanted a sports car.

After about an hour the woman had to leave, and said, "look, all I want is something that goes from 0 to 200 in less than four seconds. My birthday is coming up next week, buy something that will surprise me!"

A week later she opened her present, a new set of bathroom scales!

2. It will be my wife's birthday tomorrow. When I asked her what she wanted, she said something with diamonds would be nice. I've bought her a packet of playing cards.

3. The President Bush, while visiting a primary school class, found themselves in the middle of a discussion related to words and their meanings. The teacher asked both men if they would like to lead the discussion of the word "tragedy". So the illustrious George Bush asks the class for an example of a "tragedy".

One little boy stood up and offered: "If my best friend, who lives on a farm, is playing in the field and a runaway tractor comes along and knocks him dead, that would be a tragedy." No," says the Great Jesse Jackson, "that would be an accident."

A little girl raised her hand: "If a school bus carrying 50 children drove over a cliff, killing everyone inside, that would be a tragedy." I'm afraid not," explains the exalted Bush. "That's what we would call a great loss. " The room goes silent. No other children volunteered.

Bush searches the room. "Isn't there someone here who can give me an example of a tragedy?" Finally at the back of the room little Johnny raises his hand. In a stern voice he says: "If a plane carrying George Bush were struck by a missile and blown to smithereens that would be a tragedy." Fantastic!" exclaims Bush, "That's right. And can you tell me why that would be a tragedy?"

"Well," says little Johnny, "because it sure as hell wouldn't be a great loss, and it probably wouldn't be an accident either!!!
The last Humour on BUSH just shows how much freedom is available & utilised by the Media, Press & the Public in this country towards criticism of Govt. Authorities including The President! All of us are aware of recent incident where set of Shoes were hurled at President Bush at the stage by a citizen during a Public Meeting & how Mr. Bush took it sportively/ jokingly!

FOOD FOR THOUGHT:

From The Hindu of date

Life can begin at 60, it is all in your hands!

S. RAMACHANDRAN- Thatha Patti Group- Yahoo!

Many people feel unhappy, health-wise and security-wise, after 60 years of age owing to the diminishing importance given to them and their opinion. But it need not be so, if only we understand the basic principles of life and follow them scrupulously. Here are ten mantras to age gracefully and make life after retirement pleasant.

1. Never say ‘I am aged': There are three ages, chronological, biological, and psychological. The first is calculated based on our date of birth; the second is determined by the health conditions and the third is how old you feel you are. While we don't have control over the first, we can take care of our health with good diet, exercise and a cheerful attitude. A positive attitude and optimistic thinking can reverse the third age.

2. Health is wealth: If you really love your kith and kin, taking care of your health should be your priority. Thus, you will not be a burden to them. Have an annual health check-up and take the prescribed medicines regularly. Do take health insurance cover.

3. Money is important: Money is essential for meeting the basic necessities of life, keeping good health and earning family respect and security. Don't spend beyond your means even for your children. You have lived for them all through and it is time you enjoyed a harmonious life with your spouse. If your children are grateful and they take care of you, you are blessed. But never take it for granted.

4. Relaxation and recreation: The most relaxing and recreating forces are a healthy religious attitude, good sleep, music and laughter. Have faith in God, learn to sleep well, love good music and see the funny side of life.

5. Time is precious: It is almost like holding a horse's reins. When they are in your hands, you can control them. Imagine that everyday you are born again. Yesterday is a cancelled cheque. Tomorrow is a promissory note. Today is ready cash — use it profitably. Live this moment.

6. Change is the only permanent thing: We should accept change — it is inevitable. The only way to make sense out of change is to join the dance. Change has brought about many pleasant things. We should be happy that our children are blessed.

7. Enlightened selfishness: All of us are basically selfish. Whatever we do, we expect something in return. We should definitely be grateful to those who stood by us. But our focus should be on the internal satisfaction and happiness we derive by doing good to others, without expecting anything in return.

8. Forget and forgive: Don't be bothered too much about others' mistakes. We are not spiritual enough to show our other cheek when we are slapped in one. But for the sake of our own health and happiness, let us forgive and forget them. Otherwise, we will be only increasing our BP.

9. Everything has a purpose: Take life as it comes. Accept yourself as you are and also accept others for what they are. Everybody is unique and right in his own way.

10. Overcome the fear of death: We all know that one day we have to leave this world. Still we are afraid of death. We think that our spouse and children will be unable to withstand our loss. But the truth is no one is going to die for you; they may be depressed for some time. Time heals everything and they will carry on.
THESE ARE THE TEN STEPS I AM TRYING MY BEST TO FOLLOW IN MY OWN LIFE DURING THE REST OF MY PERIOD AHEAD!- HOPE I WILL SUCCEED BY THE GRACE OF GOD!

ANUBHAVAM PUDHUMAI- 16/ Whale Watch, Boston.

Before proceeding with Whale-watch, let us study the Mind-set of our Kids! Here is an example of Parents solving their own problem in their own way to tackle their Kids!- Courtesy- Thatha Patti Group of Yahoo.

A couple had two little boys, ages 8 and 10, that were excessively mischievous. The two were always getting into trouble and their parents could be assured that if any mischief occurred in their town their two young sons were in some way involved. The parents were at their wits end as to what to do about their sons' behavior.

The mother had heard that a clergyman in town had been successful in disciplining children in the past, so she asked her husband if he thought they should send the boys to speak with the clergyman.

The husband said, "We might as well. We need to do something before I really lose my temper!"

The clergyman agreed to speak with the boys, but asked to see them individually.

The 8-year-old went to meet with him first. The clergyman sat the boy down and asked him sternly, "Where is god?"

The boy made no response, so the clergyman repeated the question in an even sterner tone, "Where is god?"

Again the boy made no attempt to answer, so the clergyman raised his voice even more and shook his finger in the boy's face, "WHERE IS GOD?"

At that the boy bolted from the room and ran directly home slamming himself in his closet.

His older brother followed him into the closet and said, "What happened?" The younger brother replied, "We are in BIG trouble this time. God is missing and they think we did it"

ANUBHAVAM PUDHUMAI- 15 / Aquarium, Boston.

STATES OF US:
USA was formed initially in the year 1776 with Declaration of Independence by 13 American Colonies from the British Rule. One way that these States tried to show their independence was breaking away from the British English in its writing.
In 1778, Benjamin Franklin proposed new Alphabet for American English & then, an American Dictionary in the English language was however published by Noah Webster with only marginal changes with British English. Also, at later Stages, major changes were given effect in the public life with respect to LH Drive, Utilities, etc. in contrast to the British mode of life. Here are the two Extracts from- CHILDREN'S ILLUSTRATED ENCYCLOPEDIA of Dorling Kindersley  produced below in this regard.

Continuing now with Marvels of Science dealt in theLast Blog- 14 regarding Time Zones in the US, as far as India is concerned, there are only two Main Zones namely- ET( Eastern Time ) & PT ( Pacific Time ).9.50 Hrs  during Summer & 10.50 Hrs  during Winter, behind ours.
Science not only covers the Land where we live, but also goes deepest to the Ocean-bed & highest to the Space-end!

Now,  just enjoy Strange Experiences by a visitor away from India- Courtesy/- Thatha Patti Group of Yahoo!

1- I was at the checkout of a K-Mart. The clerk rang up $46.64 charge. I gave her a fifty dollar bill. She gave me back $46.64. I gave the money back to her and told her that she had made a mistake in my favour. She became indignant and informed me she was educated and knew what she was doing, and returned the money again. I gave her the money back again ... same scenario!

I departed the store with the $46.64.

This happened in Austin at Mo Pac Boulevard and Palmer Lane.

2- I walked into a Starbucks with a buy-one-get-one-free coupon for a Grande Latte. I handed it to the girl and she looked over at a little chalkboard that said "buy one-get one free."

"They're already buy-one-get-one-free," she said, "so I guess they're both free." She handed me my free Lattes and I walked out the door.

3- One day I was walking down the beach with some friends when one of them shouted, "Look at that dead bird!"

Someone looked up at the sky and said, "Where?"

4- While looking at a house, my brother asked the real estate agent which direction was north because, he explained, he didn't want the sun waking him up every morning.

She asked, "Does the sun rise in the north?"

When my brother explained that the sun rises in the east, and has for some time, she shook her head and said, "Oh I don't keep up with that stuff."

5- I used to work in technical support for a 24/7 call centre.

One day I got a call from an individual who asked what hours the call centre was open. I told him, "The number you dialled is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week."

He responded, "Is that Eastern or Pacific time?"

Wanting to end the call quickly, I said, "Uh, Pacific."

6- My sister has a lifesaving tool in her car designed to cut through a seat belt if she gets trapped. She keeps it in the trunk.

7- My friends and I were on a beer run and noticed that the cases were discounted 10%. Since it was a big party, we bought 2 cases.

The cashier multiplied 2 times 10% and gave us a 20% discount.

8- I couldn't find my luggage at the airport baggage area, so I went to the lost luggage office and told the woman there that my bags never showed up. She smiled and told me not to worry because she was a trained professional and I was in good hands.

"Now," she asked me, has your plane arrived yet?"

9-  While working at a pizza parlour ... I observed a man ordering a small pizza to go. He appeared to be alone and the cook asked him if he would like it cut into 4 pieces or 6. He thought about it for some time before responding.

"Just cut it into 4 pieces; I don't think I'm hungry enough to eat 6 pieces."

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

The wise man, whom we have called "the Venerable Sage," came one day to the court of King Janaka, ruler of a portion of India. In those early days, people had no lanterns or artificial lights. They used to keep open fires nearby most of the time. The King had a desire to ask this sage some questions about the source of light, but it happened, on that day, that the Sage did not feel inclined to talk. Still, somehow, Janaka got his permission to begin a conversation.

"Revered Sir," the king asked, "What lights a man's way in this world? What is the real source of light?"

"Why, that is easy, O King," the Venerable Sage replied, "the sun lights a man, of course. For, with the sun alone as light, a person sits, goes out, does the day's work, and returns."

"True, Sir! But when the sun has set, what lights one's way in this world?"

"Why, then, O King, the moon is one's light. For, by moonlight, one can sit, or go out, do one's work, and return."

"That is true, O Sage," agreed Janaka. "But," he added, "when the moon also has set, what then?"

"Then fire is one's light, O King. For, by the light of fire, one sits, or goes out, does one's work, and returns."

Again Janaka agreed. "That is true, Sir, but when the sun and moon have set, and the fire has gone out, then what lights one's way in the world?"

"O King," answered the sage, "at that time, voice alone is one's light. By the sound of voices, one can sit, or go out, do one's work, and return. For, when it is so dark that one cannot even see one's hand in front, one can still hear sounds, and move toward them."

"That, too, is true, Sir. But when the sun and moon have set, and the fire has gone out, and all sound has stopped, what then lights one's way in the world?"

"Then the Self, alone, is one's light, Your Majesty. For then one must sit, or go out, do one's work, and return, all with the help of the Self alone."

Janaka happened to know quite a lot about the Self already, but he urged the Venerable Sage to explain more about it. He hoped he could add further to his own spiritual knowledge, so he continued to question the Venerable Sage.

"Which is the Self?" Janaka asked.

"The Self, Your Majesty, is the Knowing One, here among our various parts -- the Inner Light within the heart. It is He who sees this world of our waking state. It is He who sees the world of dream. And, in the dreamless sleep, when we think that we are not seeing, the Self is there, seeing

"There can never be an end to the seeing of the Seer. He is eternal. In deep sleep, you seem to know nothing, but in truth, the Self goes on knowing, for can there ever be an end to the knowing of the Knower? No. He exists forever.

"In the space within your heart lies this One Controller of All, the Master of All. It cannot be destroyed. It does not attach Itself to anything. It is not bound, does not suffer, is not injured. Good and evil do not affect It.

"When a person clearly sees this Self inside as God, the Lord of the past and the future, then he has nothing to fear. This is the undying, fearless Brahman. Fearless, indeed, is Brahman, and he who knows this becomes the fearless Brahman."

ANUBHAVAM PUDHUMAI- 14/- MUSEUM OF SCIENCE, BOSTON

Today, 1st August, being the FRINDSHIP DAY, convenienly falls on First Sunday of August every year,
here is an Album below to click, conveying a wonderful Thought on Friendship!- Courtesy- Friends of Thatha Patti Group of Yahoo!
Getting up today early in the Morning, the First & Foremost thought caught my eyes is another one, also in the Album  from- The Friends of Yahoo - Thatha Patti Group!

With such Thought-Provoking words in Mind for ever to follow in our life, let us get into The Museum of Science, Boston with our Kids to unravel the Myseteries invented or discovered by our Ancestors./ Scientists!Whatever we enjoy, The Marvels of Science & Technology, due credit goes to them only!LET US SALUTE THEM ALL!
Photos taken inside the Museum will follow later.

Presently, we both are at Michigan enjoying the company of our Daughter's Family for the past two weeks, Last two Parts of  Blog were infact made & issued from here only.
I could study  the exposure of our Kids to the world of Wisdom at the close angles here right through our own Grand-daughters.Sky is the Limit for them!
I asked jokingly one Kid of 5 years old, on visit to her Home,
' Get ready to go with us to India where you can live with your Grand-parents'. She replied instantly,
'I like staying here better!'
When I started thinking her version deeper, I could study the depth of her Positive Mode of Mind-set!
Back now to the Topic of Science,US has been divided into Nine zones based on Time- Day & Night.By clicking the following links, we can get a better idea about it.
http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/time-zone/usa/

http://www.timetemperature.com/tzus/time_zone.shtml

Asia, especially India, gains a lot, because of variations in Time between us & the US.As rightly said, When US sleeps, India works with Her huge Manpower at its disposal in fulfilling the Projects Offshore obtained from US. It yields large Amount of Foreign Exchange thereby boosting our Economy.
Any one travelling to US shall be familiar with the Time adjustments  supposed to be made in his watch enroute for which Air-crew will be helpful.Even after being aware of it, at times, it misfires involving us forgetfully in tense-moments.
A friend of mine,on his way to Michigan via Chicago on Domestic Travels, was in a fix, sometime back being unaware of this time-difference..He was seen off by his Son promptly early morning from Massachusetts, the local time of which matches perfectly with Michigan but not Chicago, enroute!.Its local time was one Hour behind the others.Air-tickets displayed only the Local time but total time of travel was shown correctly.
In my friend's case, the Sender & the Receiver, both educated him well about all aspects except time-gap forgetfully.
My friend enjoyed the Hospitality of   Air-crew, relishing Snacks &Drinks served by them for Breakfast.. Audio in flight was active & conveyed some message from Cockpit in American English which my friend just assumed that it is going to land at Chicago in time.He then noticed his watch showing around 08.30AM.He verified his Ticket for Arrival showing as 07.40AM.Something started revolving in his Belly. Are we late?
Puzzled somewhat, he was looking for answer from the crew but again the Amercan Accent  played its trick Crew replied that about 35 Minutes are there left to reach. Since the connecting Flight to Michigan was at 08.35AM as per Ticket, my friend aked the Crew whether his Michigan Flight can wait for this Flight in case of its late arrival.Crew replied something which my friend failed to follow.Stout & Bulky Crew stature discouraged my friend  to repeat his query, instead, forced him to assume again that due to bad weather, it was late by 30 Minutes. Crew was right considering theOne hour Timegap. Wife of my friend also encourged him by showing outside the window that the weather was too cloudy  to land in time.Flight landed little late & my friend with his wife started rushing towards the Specific Gate from where Michigan flight was due taking off.He hurried looking for his flight timings in TV Screen, in case of late shedule, only to find later that it showed only the Timings of Arrival Flights. Then, they were rushing along the corridor of Arrival Gates only to find that Gates of Departure Flights just started then. Since their Departure Gate was at the end, it took some time more to reach where there was nobody & the Gate was found closed. They just assumed that their Flight had already left in time since their watch showed 09.08.They were looking for alternatives including their Checked-in Luggages. Then, they accidentally saw a digital clock near the Gate showing it was 08.08AM when their own watch was at 9.08..On query,a Passenger just arrived there, clarified the Mystery of One Hour Time adjustment. My friend therefore had enough time to board hi flight with 25 Minutes more left. Then it was Happy ending all the way & both relatives at either end cut a sorry figure., there was a great relief for all!
